Naroro villager Lemeki Kunabuli did all the best he could, but it was not enough to save two girls who drowned at the Sigatoka River yesterday. The girls aged between 13 and 18 had gone out for a swim when tragedy struck but their male companion was saved by Mr Kunabuli. It is believed the three had gone out for a lunch time swim.“When I arrived I saw that the boy, who was with the girls, was drowning,” Mr Kunabuli said.So I swam across to where they were and helped him out. “After I had helped the boy I went back for one of the girls. “After I had gotten the first girl out I was really tired so I called out for help and a young man from the village helped the other girl out of the river, but it was too late to save them.”Mr Kunabuli said the victims were from Oloolo which is not far from the spot where he had found them.Police assistant spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri said are waiting for the post mortem report which would determine the cause of deaths. He also advised the
public to take care when going out swimming. There were very strong winds in Sigatoka, which we believe led to the strong currents in the river.”Mr Sokomuri said if people are careful then they would be saved from danger
