Parents need to allocate more time for their children towards their studies.Minister for Education Filipe Bole said this yesterday before Term 3 starts today.“TV time, if limited to the news, would be great, as control measures need to be in place so that students can revise their school work,” Mr Bole said.It is during this time of the year that students need our support and encouragement. For parents who love the company of neighbours in “talanoa sessions” over a bowl of kava, it is preferable that they go to the community hall or any other place, as long as the children are not disturbed during their study time. The Ministry hopes that you have all enjoyed the two weeks break and are raring to get into the classroom, especially with examinations beginning in November. Time is very short.Mr Bole called on teachers to spend more times with students to prepare them for examinations.I hope that you will avail yourselves when students come around seeking assistance.Lessons need
to be prepared well in advance, notes simplified charts and other visual aids should be displayed appropriately.”Mr Bole said students may be impressed with a teacher’s use of expressions, however if those terms were not clearly explained, then time was wasted and students would become passive listeners. Therefore, he said, it was important that teachers make use of their spare time researching, collecting information, sharing with fellow teachers or seeking assistance from more senior teachers. He said collaboration among staff is encouraged to improve students’ academic performance.
